Pleasanton Man Sentenced for False Statement to Bank
A 39-year-old man from Pleasanton, Nebraska, has been sentenced to 3 years in federal prison for making a false statement to a financial institution, resulting in a loss of $1,771,728.
Shane M. Wibbels was sentenced on April 26, 2016, by Senior United States District Court Judge Lyle E. Strom. In addition to his prison sentence, Wibbels was ordered to make restitution in the amount of $1,771,728.
According to the investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Wibbels made a false statement in an Agricultural Financial Statement, which he submitted to a financial institution located in the District of Nebraska. The financial institution was insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
The false statement failed to identify significant liabilities that Wibbels had previously incurred. As a result, loans to Wibbels were approved by the financial institution, which later incurred a loss of $1,771,728 due to Wibbels’ default on the loans.
The case was investigated by the FBI. Wibbels was also ordered to begin a 2-year term of supervised release after his release from prison.
The sentence handed down to Wibbels serves as a reminder of the consequences of making false statements to financial institutions. In this case, the consequences were severe, resulting in a significant loss for the financial institution and a lengthy prison sentence for Wibbels.
The FBI continues to investigate cases of bank fraud and other financial crimes. If you have any information about a financial crime, contact the FBI at tips.fbi.gov.
