Plymouth Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Armed Robbery

Raleigh, NC – In a shocking turn of events, William Edward White, 34, of Plymouth, was sentenced to 129 months imprisonment followed by 5 years of supervised release for his role in a brazen armed robbery.

The heist took place on October 25, 2016, at Friendly Check Cashing in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. White waited outside for an employee to arrive and then pushed his way through the rear door, pointing a handgun at the employee. He forced her into the main room, threatened to shoot her if she didn’t open the safe quickly, and even struck her on the back of the head with the firearm.

White made off with $45,500 in U.S. Currency, binding the employee with duct tape before leaving the scene. Detectives later identified White as the suspect based on a DNA match from the torn duct tape. When questioned by authorities, White admitted his involvement in the crime.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer. The investigation was conducted by the Elizabeth City Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF). Assistant United States Attorney Jake D. Pugh represented the government in this case.

U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, Robert J. Higdon, Jr., announced the sentencing, which brings a sense of relief to the community. White was charged in a two-count indictment on August 16, 2017, and pled guilty to those charges on April 19, 2018.

The case highlights the importance of community cooperation in fighting crime. The Elizabeth City Police Department and the ATF worked tirelessly to bring White to justice, and their efforts have sent a strong message to would-be perpetrators.

The sentencing of White serves as a reminder that violent crime will not be tolerated in our communities. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work with law enforcement agencies to ensure that those who commit such crimes are held accountable.
