Man Sentenced for Killing Another with His Vehicle in Kyle, South Dakota
Rapid City, SD – A Kyle, South Dakota man has been sentenced to federal prison for his role in a fatal accident that occurred last year.
Scotty Old Horse, 28, was sentenced to five years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund for his conviction of voluntary manslaughter.
The crime occurred on November 2, 2022, when Old Horse struck another man with his vehicle in Kyle, South Dakota. The victim died as a result of the incident.
The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office because the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute, mandates that certain violent crimes alleged to have occurred in Indian Country be prosecuted in Federal court as opposed to State court.
This matter was investigated by the FBI and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Anna Lindrooth prosecuted the case.
Old Horse was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following the sentencing. The case highlights the importance of federal jurisdiction in prosecuting violent crimes that occur in Indian Country.
