Raymond Anthony Montanez, Methamphetamine Trafficking, California 2012

LOS ANGELES – In a disturbing case of gang violence and narcotics trafficking, a Pomona man has pleaded guilty to federal weapons and drug offenses in a deal expected to bring a sentence of up to 17½ years in federal prison.

Raymond Anthony Montanez, 24, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The shocking incident unfolded on July 29, 2012, when Montanez shot himself in the leg and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Pomona Police Officers investigating the incident responded to his residence, where they recovered 243.7 grams of methamphetamine, two other firearms, and discovered narcotics.

According to authorities, the firearms charge relates to Montanez’s possession of a firearm on July 4, 2012, when he was prohibited from possessing any guns due to a previous felony conviction in 2008 for carrying a loaded handgun.

The case against Montanez is the result of an investigation by the San Gabriel Valley Safe Streets Gang Task Force, which includes agents and officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Pomona Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Montanez pleaded guilty before United States District Judge Philip S. Gutierrez, who is scheduled to sentence the defendant on February 10. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors and Montanez agree that he will be sentenced to at least 10 years in federal prison and up to 17½ years in custody.

Montanez’s guilty plea and the subsequent investigation raise concerns about the presence of gang violence and narcotics trafficking in the Pomona community. The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat these crimes and bring perpetrators to justice.

The guilty plea is a significant step towards holding Montanez accountable for his actions, and it is hoped that this case will serve as a deterrent to others who engage in similar activities.
