Porcupine Man Charged with Assault on Federal Officer
Griffin Lee Cross, 26, was sentenced to 2 years of probation for assaulting a federal officer in a shocking incident on February 12, 2020.
According to court documents, Cross was intoxicated at a residence near Porcupine when Oglala Sioux Tribe Public Safety Officer responded to a report. The officer arrested Cross, but during the arrest, Cross threw his head back, making contact with the officer’s forehead and causing the officer to fall backwards.
The incident led to a federal indictment in September 2020, with Cross pleading guilty on April 23, 2021. Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Poppen prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Oglala Sioux Tribe Public Safety and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Criminal Investigations Division.
U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier handed down the sentence on July 28, 2021, ordering Cross to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
