Preston County Man Convicted on Gun and Meth Charges
A 37-year-old man from Albright, West Virginia has been convicted of unlawful possession of a firearm and methamphetamine distribution.
Richard Star Haggarty, 37, of Albright, West Virginia, was found guilty in federal court of possessing 12 firearms and crystal meth in December 2016.
Haggarty, who had previously been convicted of felony offenses in California, is prohibited from possessing a firearm. His admission to the crime has led to serious charges.
The Preston County resident faces up to 10 years and a $250,000 fine for the firearm count and up to 20 years and a $1,000,000 fine for the methamphetamine charge.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen D. Warner prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the United States Marshals Service investigated the case.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi presided over the case, hearing the plea from Haggarty. Acting United States Attorney Betsy Steinfeld Jividen announced the conviction, further highlighting the severity of the charges.
Haggarty’s guilty plea comes after a thorough investigation into his activities. His case serves as a reminder of the consequences of breaking the law and the importance of upholding gun laws and combating the spread of methamphetamine.
