GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: In a gritty setback for Georgia’s sex trade syndicates, Hyeon Joo Chae, the 45-year-old ring boss of the Sedona Tanning Salon in Macon, was sentenced to three years in federal prison for conspiracy to promote prostitution and money laundering.
Chae, who had previously operated under the guise of a massage parlor, faced stiff penalties after authorities uncovered her illegal enterprise. She also forfeited substantial assets, including a Buckhead condominium, a BMW X5, and $4,000 in cash.
The federal judge overseeing the case, Honorable Marc T. Treadwell, delivered the sentence without parole consideration. Chae’s co-conspirator, Kye Wol Dyreson, 73, received three years of probation for her role as manager during Chae’s absences.
Two others, Ki Un Jordan and Jin Noh, both Korean nationals, received probation for their involvement in the ring after cooperating with authorities. Jordan was sentenced to three years’ probation, while Noh got one year.
Chae had previously faced charges in state court for maintaining a place of prostitution but continued her operations under a shell corporation. Despite the facade of a tanning and massage parlor, the business was shown to operate solely as a brothel with no legitimate services provided.
The successful investigation and prosecution were attributed to joint efforts by local and federal law enforcement agencies, including the Macon/Bibb County Sheriff’s Department, FBI, IRS-CI, and ICE HSI. U.S. Attorney Michael J. Moore emphasized the importance of targeting human trafficking and protecting vulnerable populations in our society.
