Chiweze Ihunwo, a 24-year-old man from Randolph, Massachusetts, has pleaded guilty to engaging in the business of dealing in firearms without a license, federal authorities announced yesterday.
Ihunwo was arrested in connection with a firearms trafficking operation that spanned from 2019 to 2020, during which he traveled from Massachusetts to North Carolina to acquire firearms for resale. The firearms were then sold to various individuals in Massachusetts, often through social media advertisements.
According to court documents, Ihunwo also made arrangements to sell firearms to an individual who was later arrested in connection with a June 23, 2020 shooting incident on I-95 in Providence, Rhode Island.
During a search of a residence in Providence where Ihunwo had been staying, authorities recovered an AK-style pistol and various rounds of ammunition.
Ihunwo’s guilty plea comes after he was indicted on January 21, 2021, and is scheduled to be sentenced on December 8, 2021, by U.S. District Court Judge Leo T. Sorokin.
The charge of dealing in firearms without a license carries a sentence of up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.
Acting U.S. Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell and James Ferguson, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, announced the guilty plea, which was the result of a joint investigation involving the Randolph Police Department, the Providence Police Department, and the Rhode Island State Police.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Mackenzie Duane of Mendell’s Major Crimes Unit is prosecuting the case.
