CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – A brazen scheme to smuggle suboxone into FCI Gilmer prison in Glenville, West Virginia, has landed three individuals in hot water. U.S. Attorney Bill Powell announced the indictment of Quadiri Ayodele, 41, Francisco Masias, 41, and Joanna Masias, 36, of Cicero, Illinois, for their alleged involvement in the illicit operation.
The indictment charges Ayodele, Francisco Masias, and Joanna Masias with one count of “Conspiracy to Introduce and Obtain a Prohibited Object (Narcotic)” and one count of “Attempt to Introduce a Prohibited Object (Narcotic).” Joanna Masias is also facing one count of “False Statement to a Federal Agency.”
The alleged scheme unfolded in March and April 2019, when the trio developed a plan to smuggle suboxone into the prison. Joanna Masias, who was visiting Francisco Masias at the time, reportedly lied on a form stating she didn’t have narcotics in her possession. An investigation by the Bureau of Prisons Special Investigative Services uncovered the scheme.
Ayodele, Francisco Masias, and Joanna Masias each face up to five years of incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000 for the conspiracy count and up to 20 years of incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000 for the contraband count. Joanna Masias also faces up to five years of incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000 for the false statement count.
The Federal Sentencing Guidelines will dictate the actual sentence imposed, taking into account the severity of the offenses and the prior criminal history of the defendants, if any.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher L. Bauer is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
It is essential to note that an indictment is merely an accusation. The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
