Belinda Burdette, 43, of Racine, Sentenced for Trafficking Oxycodone
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A Boone County woman has been sentenced to five years of probation for her role in trafficking oxycodone in the region.
Belinda Burdette, 43, of Racine, was found guilty of using a cell phone to arrange the delivery of oxycodone pills to a woman in Boone County. The pills were obtained from a local K-Mart Pharmacy in Charleston, where Burdette worked as a pharmacy technician.
According to court documents, neither Burdette nor the person the pills were delivered to had a valid prescription for oxycodone. The case was the result of a cooperative investigation between the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.
The successful prosecution of Burdette is part of an ongoing effort led by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia to combat the illicit sale and misuse of prescription drugs and heroin.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office, joined by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, is committed to aggressively pursuing and shutting down illegal pill trafficking, eliminating open air drug markets, and curtailing the spread of opiate painkillers and heroin in communities across the Southern District.
Burdette previously pled guilty in March, admitting to her role in the oxycodone trafficking scheme. Her sentence reflects a growing concern over the misuse of prescription drugs in West Virginia.
The case serves as a warning to those who would engage in similar activities, and highlights the commitment of law enforcement agencies to protecting communities from the scourge of opiate addiction.
