Racketeer Pleads Guilty in Maryland ATM Heist

A 23-year-old man from Marlow Heights, Maryland, has pleaded guilty to his involvement in a racketeering conspiracy. Stefon Janey, also known as ‘Stef,’ and ‘Stef Luva,’ admitted to conspiring with members of the Simple City Criminal Organization (SCCO), a group engaged in various forms of fraud and theft.

According to his plea agreement, which was announced by United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein, Janey and his co-conspirators planned and carried out a range of crimes, including vehicle theft, identity theft, and access device fraud. The SCCO received income from these activities, including the sale of stolen property and bank fraud.

Janey’s involvement in the organization was detailed in a series of incidents, including a failed attempt to steal money from an ATM in Odenton, Maryland, on March 30, 2015. The following month, he and a co-conspirator robbed a gas station in Beltsville, Maryland, using a crowbar to gain entry and stealing an employee’s cell phone and cash.

Janey also attempted to steal money from an ATM in College Park, Maryland, on May 14, 2014. He now faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced on July 26, 2016.

Janey is the second defendant to plead guilty in connection with the racketeering conspiracy. Co-defendant Jessica Rubio, 38, of Washington, D.C., previously pleaded guilty to her involvement in the scheme and is set to be sentenced on June 3, 2016.

United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein praised the FBI, Prince George’s County Police Department, and Montgomery County Police Department for their work in the investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Thomas M. Sullivan and Nicolas A. Mitchell.

The guilty plea has brought an end to one chapter in the case, but the investigation into the Simple City Criminal Organization is ongoing. As the facts of the case continue to unfold, the public can expect to learn more about the activities of this notorious group.
