TAMPA, FL – Raequin Smith, 27, of Tampa, is headed to federal prison for more than six years after pleading guilty to possession with the intent to distribute cocaine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking. U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle handed down the sentence Friday, February 24, 2023, bringing a measure of closure to a case marked by reckless endangerment and blatant disregard for public safety.
The drama unfolded on April 5, 2022, when Smith was initially pulled over for speeding. Instead of cooperating, Smith floored it, initiating a high-speed chase that snaked through the busy streets of Tampa. Police helicopters were quickly deployed, tracking Smith as he blew through traffic signals and put countless lives at risk. The pursuit wasn’t about a stolen car; it was a desperate attempt to protect a cargo of drugs and an illegally possessed firearm.
Even after officers deployed spike strips, successfully disabling his vehicle, Smith wasn’t done running. He abandoned the car and took off on foot, ditching a bookbag in a nearby driveway. Inside that bag, investigators found the evidence that sealed his fate: a firearm, ammunition, a significant quantity of cocaine, marijuana, two digital scales used for weighing drugs, and a stash of empty baggies – the tools of a seasoned drug trafficker.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Tampa Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ (ATF) Strategic Pattern Armed Robbery Technical Apprehension (SPARTA) unit. These agencies worked tirelessly to connect Smith to the evidence and build a solid case that ultimately led to his conviction. Assistant United States Attorney Maria Guzman skillfully prosecuted the case, ensuring justice was served.
