Local Man Caught in Web of Gun and Drug Crimes
A Charleston man has been sentenced to 72 months in prison for a string of gun and drug crimes, including the distribution of methamphetamine.
Rahmell Rashaad Thomas, 32, was found guilty of selling approximately four ounces of methamphetamine to a confidential informant from his residence in Charleston on March 5, 2020. This transaction led law enforcement officers to obtain a search warrant for the same residence, where they discovered approximately 341 additional grams of methamphetamine, a Lorcin .380 semi-automatic pistol, and United States currency.
Thomas admitted to possessing the items and to selling methamphetamine in the Charleston area for at least three months prior to his arrest. He also confessed to obtaining methamphetamine in one pound increments from a source in Morgantown, which he would then bring back to Charleston to sell.
Thomas has a prior felony conviction in the state of New York for attempted assault in the second degree, which prohibits him from possessing firearms.
U.S. District Judge Irene C. Berger imposed the sentence. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy B. Wolfe handled the prosecution.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office praised the work of the Charleston Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and the United States Marshals Service for their efforts in bringing Thomas to justice.
Thomas will serve his 72-month sentence, a result of his involvement in the distribution of methamphetamine and his possession of a firearm as a convicted felon.
