Rail Safety Week Turns Deadly in Iowa

Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett’s proclaimed Rail Safety Week has turned into a grim reality, with a spike in rail-related fatalities in Iowa. The week, which was supposed to raise awareness about reducing crossing crashes and pedestrian/railroad trespass incidents, has seen a disturbing trend of accidents.

According to sources, U.S. Attorney Kevin W. Techau will be present at the Monday morning event to address the growing concern. He will be joined by rail safety experts, representatives from the Iowa Department of Transportation, Iowa Operation Lifesaver, and the Cedar Rapids Police Department.

As part of the Rail Safety Week activities, there will be a Crash Vehicle Display at the Cedar Rapids Central Fire Station on Monday, September 26, at 10:00 a.m. The display is expected to be a sobering reminder of the dangers of rail-related accidents. Media will have the opportunity to interview key officials and receive a press release with more information.

On Wednesday, September 28, a Rail Display will be set up at the Downtown Cedar Rapids Public Library, where Iowa Operation Lifesaver’s Francis Edeker will be present all day. The display is expected to provide valuable insights into the importance of rail safety.

On Thursday, September 29, the public will have the opportunity to ride along with the train crew as part of the Officer on the Train program. Media are invited to join the ride, but space is limited and reservations must be made by noon on Wednesday.
