RALEIGH – A Raleigh felon has been handed a 16-year sentence after being caught with illegal firearms and drugs. Courtney Daniel Davis, 41, was sentenced to 192 months’ imprisonment, followed by six years of supervised release, following his conviction on drug trafficking and firearm charges.
Davis had been targeted by the Raleigh Police Department in 2018 for selling cocaine base from his home. A controlled buy led to his arrest, and further investigation turned up a cache of drugs and a loaded handgun.
During a search at Davis’s residence, officers found 4.9 grams of cocaine base, $80 in drug proceeds, and a semiautomatic handgun with ammunition. The drugs recovered were worth thousands of dollars. The case is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative aimed at reducing violent crime.
Assistant United States Attorney Daniel W. Smith prosecuted Davis for the government, and the investigation was led by the Raleigh Police Department. This sentence underscores the effort to take back neighborhoods from drug traffickers and illegal arms dealers.
The Take Back North Carolina Initiative, a regional program emphasizing federal prosecutors’ collaboration with local law enforcement, has been instrumental in tackling these kinds of crimes. Davis’s case is another example of the collaborative efforts between federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to make communities safer.
