Randy Rashawn Moorehead, 34, Convicted Felon, Pleads Guilty to Possession of a Firearm
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a shocking turn of events, Randy Rashawn Moorehead, a 34-year-old resident of Charlotte, North Carolina, has pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon. This development was announced by Dena J. King, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.
Moorehead’s guilty plea comes after a lengthy investigation by the ATF and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD). According to court documents, on January 12, 2022, a CMPD officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop of Moorehead’s vehicle for a traffic violation. However, Moorehead failed to comply and fled the scene, eventually leading to a dead-end street where he was apprehended.
During the subsequent search of the vehicle, law enforcement officers detected a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. A thorough search revealed a bag containing a firearm, a quantity of cocaine base, marijuana, and digital scales. It is worth noting that Moorehead has a prior felony conviction for Intentional Child Abuse Causing Serious Physical Injury, making him prohibited from possessing firearms.
Moorehead is currently in federal custody, and the statutory maximum for the charged offense is 15 years in prison. A sentencing date has not been set.
The ATF and CMPD conducted the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Shavonn Bennette of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Charlotte prosecuting the case. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities.
Project Safe Neighborhoods is a collaborative effort between law enforcement and the community to make neighborhoods safer for everyone. The program is based on core principles, including fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney King emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions, especially those who pose a threat to public safety. The guilty plea is a significant step towards ensuring that Moorehead faces the consequences of his actions.
