A Rapid City, South Dakota, man was sentenced for his role in covering up the physical abuse of a young boy.
On June 20, 2017, Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken sentenced Mitchell Lee Wisecarver, age 44, to time served of 17.5 months, 1 year of supervised release, and ordered him to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The abuse, which occurred from October 2014 to February 2015, ultimately resulted in the child’s death. Wisecarver was charged with Misprison of a Felony on September 15, 2015.
He pleaded guilty on March 3, 2017, stemming from covering up for his wife, Lori Wisecarver, who allowed the continued physical abuse of the child.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sarah B. Collins and Eric Kelderman prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety.
This case highlights the devastating consequences of neglect and abuse, and serves as a reminder that those who fail to report such crimes will be held accountable.
The investigation and prosecution of Wisecarver’s case demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to protecting vulnerable children and ensuring justice is served.
