Rapid City Man Sentenced for Theft from Indian Health Services
Rapid City, S.D. – In a shocking case of theft, a 59-year-old man has been sentenced to 2 years of probation for stealing from Indian Health Services.
Michael Gray, age 59, was sentenced on October 16, 2014, by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court, for his role in the theft.
According to court documents, Gray, while employed by an Indian Health Services (IHS) Hospital, took equipment belonging to IHS and used a General Services Administration gas card for his personal use between 2009 and 2013.
The theft amount totals $6,476.42, with Gray also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Gray was indicted for Theft or Embezzlement in Connection with Health Care on March 18, 2014, and he pled guilty on June 4, 2014.
This case was investigated by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman prosecuted the case.
The investigation revealed a pattern of theft that spanned four years, with Gray using the gas card for personal expenses, including gas, food, and entertainment.
Gray’s sentence is a clear message that theft will not be tolerated, especially in organizations that provide essential services to vulnerable populations.
