ST. CHARLES, MO – A St. Louis man pleaded guilty Tuesday to a brazen act of arson, admitting he hurled Molotov cocktails at a St. Charles restaurant just twenty minutes after igniting one on a nearby residential street. Rashaad Cotton, 25, of St. Louis County, confessed in U.S. District Court to attempting to commit arson, a felony that could land him behind bars for decades.
The attack unfolded on April 30, 2021, around 6:20 p.m. According to Assistant U.S. Attorney John Ware, Cotton first threw a crude incendiary device on a quiet suburban street. He then drove to Sauce on the Side restaurant on Beale Street, a bustling eatery with customers inside. There, he unleashed two Molotov cocktails – one targeting the northeast side of the building, and another aimed directly at the front door.
Adding to the danger, Cotton wasn’t acting alone. A juvenile female accomplice joined him in the assault, throwing a third Molotov cocktail at the restaurant’s patio area. The pair then attempted a hasty escape, crashing their vehicle into a curb shortly after fleeing the scene. Both were quickly apprehended by authorities.
Cotton’s motive, as he confessed to police, was petty revenge. He’d been fired from Sauce on the Side the night before and, fueled by anger, sought to “scare people.” This wasn’t a calculated act of terror, but a reckless, impulsive explosion of rage that put lives at risk. The restaurant was open and serving customers at the time of the attack, meaning Cotton’s actions could have easily resulted in serious injury or death.
The investigation was a joint effort between the St. Charles Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The ATF’s involvement highlights the seriousness with which federal authorities treat arson, particularly when it involves the use of dangerous, homemade explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney John Ware is leading the prosecution.
Cotton now faces a sentencing hearing on April 19, where he could receive a prison sentence ranging from five to twenty years. While the motive may seem small, the potential consequences of his actions are anything but. This case serves as a stark reminder that even seemingly impulsive acts of violence can carry severe federal penalties, and endanger the lives of innocent people.
