BUFFALO, N.Y. – A Buffalo man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for breaking into a railroad car in 2018. Ray Chrostowski, 26, was convicted of breaking into and larceny from interstate carrier facilities, a crime that took place in Erie County.

According to U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr., Chrostowski and his co-defendants, Paul Krieger and Nicholas Birdwell, entered railroad cars containing interstate shipments of freight in transit on nine separate occasions between May and June 2018. They broke into railcars and removed the property therefrom, resulting in a total loss of $4,718.16 and a large quantity of Jefferson bourbon valued at $3,118.80.

The sentencing is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Stephen Belongia and the CSX Police, under the direction of Chief Sean Douris.

Chrostowski’s co-defendants, Birdwell and Krieger, are awaiting sentencing after being previously convicted.

Chrostowski’s crimes were committed between May and June of 2018, with the defendant entering railroad cars containing interstate shipments of freight on nine separate occasions.

According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura A. Higgins, the total loss relating to the vehicles stolen was over $4,718.16, while a large quantity of Jefferson bourbon valued at $3,118.80 was also stolen.
