Shiprock Man Charged with Assault in Indian Country
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A 31-year-old man from Shiprock, New Mexico, was arraigned in federal court on a two-count indictment for his role in a violent assault on the Navajo Nation.
Raydell Billy, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, faces charges of conspiracy to commit assault with a dangerous weapon and assault with a dangerous weapon with the intent to do bodily harm.
The alleged assault occurred on April 11 at a residence in the South Side Non-profit Housing in Shiprock, where Raydell Billy and his co-defendants, Raynorma Billy and Alvin White, allegedly attacked the victim.
According to the indictment, Raynorma Billy drove the group to the residence with the intent to assault the victim, and then prevented the other occupants from intervening while Raydell Billy and Alvin White assaulted the victim with their fists and a machete.
Raydell Billy was arraigned in federal court today and will remain in custody pending trial. The trial date has not been scheduled.
Alvin White, the other co-defendant, was arrested on April 24 and appeared in court for a preliminary and detention hearing on May 2. He will also remain in custody pending trial and is scheduled for arraignment on May 31.
An indictment is only an allegation, and Raydell Billy is presumed innocent until proven guilty. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison for conspiracy and up to ten years in prison for assault with a dangerous weapon.
The case was investigated by the Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, with assistance from the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations. Assistant United States Attorney Mark Pfizenmayer is prosecuting the case.
