A 35-year-old Corpus Christi resident has been sentenced to 188 months in federal prison for his role in a crack cocaine distribution scheme, announced U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson today. Raymond Estrada was convicted of possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine and was found to be a career offender by the court.
Estrada was arrested on May 15, 2014, after a traffic stop by the Corpus Christi Police Department. During the stop, officers discovered a digital scale and packing materials in Estrada’s kitchen, as well as a knit cap containing approximately 56 grams of crack cocaine.
Estrada had previously been convicted of several felonies and was on supervised release at the time of his arrest. He pleaded guilty to the charges on November 3, 2015.
Senior U.S. District Judge Janis Graham Jack ordered Estrada to serve 188 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release. In addition, the judge revoked Estrada’s supervised release on his 2008 conviction and ordered him to serve an additional 24 months in prison, to be served consecutively.
As a result, Estrada will serve a total sentence of 212 months in federal prison. He is currently in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility, which will be determined in the near future.
The case against Estrada was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Corpus Christi Police Department’s Gang and Narcotics Units. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lance Watt prosecuted the case.
Estrada’s sentence is a result of his continued involvement in drug trafficking, despite previous convictions and attempts to rehabilitate through supervised release. It serves as a reminder of the severe consequences that come with involvement in the illicit narcotics trade.
