Augusta Man Pleads Guilty to Possessing Firearm

A 41-year-old man from Augusta, Maine, has pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm after being convicted of at least one felony offense. Raymond Lilly was arrested in September 2023 at an encampment in Mill Park after Augusta police officers discovered a Smith & Wesson model M&P 15, .22 caliber rifle in his tent.

Lilly had previously been convicted of felony firearms offenses in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine, which bars him from possessing firearms. The charges against Lilly are a direct result of a joint investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Augusta Police Department.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in Maine communities. PSN brings together law enforcement and community organizations to prevent violence and make neighborhoods safer.

Lilly faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 15 years, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of up to three years. His sentencing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigative report by the U.S. Probation Office.
