Armed Threat Lands Springfield Man in Prison
BANGOR, Maine – A Springfield man was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Bangor today for unlawfully possessing a firearm, following an armed threat incident.
According to court records, a deputy from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report that James Elliott, 67, had threatened an insurance company home inspector with a firearm in February 2024.
As the investigation unfolded, authorities found six firearms, including a loaded .44 magnum lever-action rifle, during a search of Elliott’s home in March 2024.
Elliott is precluded from possessing firearms due to two prior felony convictions in the state of Kansas, making the discovery of these weapons a major concern.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) investigated the case with assistance from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office, the Maine Warden Service, and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.
On February 4, 2025, Elliott pleaded guilty to the charges, paving the way for his sentencing.
U.S. District Judge Stacey D. Neumann handed down a 21-month prison sentence, followed by 3 years of supervised release, sending a strong message about the severity of the offense.
