Tucson Man Sentenced to 5 Years for Unlawful Possession of Machineguns, Pipe Bombs, and a Firearm Silencer

A Tucson man has been sentenced to five years in prison for unlawfully possessing three machineguns, six pipe bombs, and a firearm silencer. Raymundo Lopez Casillas, III, 20, of Tucson, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Jennifer G. Zipps last week.

The incidents began on June 7, 2019, when Casillas discharged a firearm in his bedroom, striking his 17-year-old nephew in the head, killing him. Following the investigation, law enforcement discovered a stash of illegal firearms and explosives in Casillas’ bedroom.

During the search, officers found six pipe bombs, one fully automatic machinegun, two machinegun conversion devices, and a firearm silencer – all of which are unlawful to possess without proper registration. Additionally, they found 13 additional firearms, a large amount of ammunition, and high-capacity magazines in Casillas’ bedroom.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, with assistance from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, conducted the investigation in this case. Assistant United States Attorney Angela W. Woolridge handled the prosecution.

Casillas previously pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of unregistered firearms. He will serve a 60-month prison sentence for his crimes.
