Devin Anthony Sumner, Assault, Minnesota 2022

MINNEAPOLIS – A chilling case of domestic violence in Red Lake has reached its conclusion as Devin Anthony Sumner, 20, pleaded guilty to one count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury. According to U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger, the incident occurred on March 10, 2022.

Sumner had been involved in a relationship with the victim when, in a fit of rage early morning, he began to physically abuse her. While driving his car, Sumner escalated the violence by grabbing a 12-gauge G-Force Arms shotgun and hitting the victim on the hands and body repeatedly with the firearm.

The brutal attack left the victim with life-threatening injuries, including a broken hand, multiple lacerations, and extensive bruising. Emergency hospital treatment was required, followed by surgery to repair the damage caused by Sumner’s actions.

Sumner faced justice on February 9, 2023, when he pleaded guilty before U.S. District Court Chief Judge Patrick J. Schiltz. Sentencing is set for June 13, 2023.

This harrowing case was investigated by the Red Lake Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Headwaters Safe Trails Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Evan B. Gilead and Emily A. Polachek are prosecuting the charges against Sumner.

Sumner’s conviction serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by domestic violence and the critical role law enforcement plays in protecting vulnerable victims.
