Man Charged with Selling Fentanyl that Led to Fatal Overdose
LOS ANGELES – A federal grand jury indictment unsealed today charges Marcus Michael Takaya Poydras, 32, a dual U.S. and Japanese citizen, with one count of distributing fentanyl resulting in death, one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, one count of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, and two counts of possession of a firearm in relation to a drug trafficking crime.
The indictment alleges that Poydras sold counterfeit oxycodone pills laced with fentanyl to another drug dealer on January 22, 2020. The second dealer then distributed the pills to a 43-year-old victim who later suffered a fatal fentanyl overdose at his Marina del Rey residence.
The investigation into the overdose death led to a federal search warrant at Poydras’ residence on July 14, 2020, where agents seized cocaine and a .38-caliber revolver with an obliterated serial number.
On January 17, 2021, Redondo Beach Police officers arrested Poydras and recovered several suspected controlled substances, including counterfeit oxycodone pills containing fentanyl. Poydras was also carrying a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun at the time of his arrest.
Poydras is currently being held without bond pending trial, which is set for November 2. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 30 years in federal prison.
The DEA, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and the Redondo Beach Police Department are investigating this matter. Assistant United States Attorney Patrick Castañeda is prosecuting the case.
This case is the result of an investigation by the DEA’s Overdose Justice Task Force, which was created to address opioid-related deaths in the greater Los Angeles area.
