HOUSTON — A 28-year-old former Iraqi refugee has been sentenced to a staggering 12 years in federal prison for his role in supporting the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), according to U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.
Abdulrahman Mohammed Hafedh Alqaysi, a legal permanent resident of Richmond, Texas, pleaded guilty on March 7th for providing material support to the designated foreign terrorist organization. The court ordered Alqaysi to serve 144 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release.
In issuing the sentence, U.S. District Judge Alfred Bennett emphasized the gravity of the offense and its impact on both Americans and the international community. Ganjei added that Alqaysi’s actions were a betrayal of the kindness shown to him when he was allowed to live in the United States.
Alqaysi confessed to using his computer expertise to develop and disseminate logos for ISIS’s media wing, the Kalachnikov team. He also shared hacking videos, instructions, stolen credit card information, and counterfeit identity documents with ISIS members between 2015 and 2020.
He will remain in custody until transferred to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility. The investigation was carried out by the FBI Houston Joint Terrorism Task Force, with assistance from Immigration Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Heather Winter and National Security Division Trial Attorney Michael Dittoe prosecuted the case.
This sentence serves as a stark warning: assisting terrorist organizations will result in significant punishment within the Southern District of Texas.
