BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The grim tally of deaths in human smuggling operations has reached a new chapter as Julia Isairis Torres and Erasmo Garcia face decades behind bars for their role in a deadly smuggling ring that claimed the lives of four illegal aliens.
Both Starr County residents were sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Judge Rolando Olvera, with Torres receiving a 48-month-term of imprisonment followed by two years of supervised release. Garcia was handed a 32-month sentence and must also serve two years of supervised release after his prison term.
The judge’s stern warning echoed the horror of the smuggling operation that resulted in a catastrophic highway accident on March 24, 2019. In Duval County, law enforcement attempted to stop a Nissan Xterra driven by Garcia, who failed to comply and caused the vehicle to overturn, killing four victims and seriously injuring six others.
The tragedy struck immigrants from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Ecuador, including one minor. U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei branded human smuggling as a dangerous and deadly business, warning potential customers that their lives are at risk. ‘If you’re thinking of employing an alien smuggler, think again,’ Ganjei said.
Torres and Garcia pleaded guilty to conspiring to transport illegal aliens using vehicles. Garcia confessed to acting as a scout, while Torres admitted to recruiting others for the same role. Both have admitted their guilt in court.
The investigation was led by Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations, with support from various local law enforcement agencies. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jose E. Arreola Jr. and Jose Esquivel Jr. prosecuted the case, ensuring that justice was served for the victims of this ruthless operation.
