HOUSTON – Luis Adrian Torres-Tamayo, a 39-year-old Mexican national with a history of violent crime, is headed back to federal prison after being sentenced for illegally re-entering the United States. The sentencing comes after a delay due to the recent government shutdown, but the feds are now making sure he pays for his crimes.
Torres-Tamayo pleaded guilty June 30th to the charge of illegally re-entering the country. U.S. District Judge Kenneth M. Hoyt didn’t mess around, handing down a 105-month sentence. Once he serves his time, he’ll be facing deportation, though considering his track record, that might just be a temporary fix.
This isn’t Torres-Tamayo’s first rodeo with the law. He was initially removed from the U.S. in 2012 following a conviction for possession of a controlled substance. But he didn’t stay away. In 2022, he escalated things dramatically, assaulting two local law enforcement officers during a domestic violence call. Witnesses say he repeatedly attacked the officers, going so far as to seize their tasers and deliver blows with a closed fist. The assault landed him three years in state prison.
Apparently, that wasn’t enough of a deterrent. Torres-Tamayo once again crossed the border illegally, prompting the current federal investigation and prosecution. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Celia Moyer and Amanda Alum built a solid case, ensuring he’d be held accountable. He remains in custody awaiting transfer to a yet-to-be-determined Federal Bureau of Prisons facility.
The investigation was spearheaded by Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Enforcement and Removal Operations. This case is being touted as part of “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide push by the Department of Justice to crack down on illegal immigration, dismantle cartels, and protect communities from violent criminals. The operation pulls resources from both the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhoods.
While the feds are framing this as a victory for border security and public safety, it begs the question: how many times will Torres-Tamayo need to be caught and incarcerated before the system finally keeps him from re-offending? Only time will tell if this 105-month sentence, followed by deportation, will finally put a stop to his criminal activity.
