Harrisburg Man Indicted On Cocaine And Firearm Charges
The streets of Harrisburg are getting bloodier, and this time it’s thanks to 28-year-old Reginald Barton, who has been indicted on charges of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of a Firearm in furtherance of Drug Trafficking, and Possession With Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance.
According to a joint investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Harrisburg Police Bureau, Barton allegedly shot at a Harrisburg Police officer during a traffic stop, fled the scene, and was later apprehended after discarding a firearm and a bag containing crack cocaine.
The charges, announced by United States Attorney Peter Smith, are a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against violent crime in the city. ‘This case is a prime example of the consequences of engaging in violent behavior,’ Smith said. ‘We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those who commit these crimes are held accountable.’
Barton’s case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Meredith A. Taylor, who is determined to see justice served. ‘We will do everything in our power to ensure that Mr. Barton is brought to justice for his crimes,’ Taylor said.
The indictment is a result of a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Harrisburg Police Bureau to curb violent crime in the city. The investigation is ongoing, and further information will be released as it becomes available.
Barton is currently being held without bail and is expected to appear in court soon. The maximum penalty under the federal statute for these charges is life imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.
Indictments and Criminal Informations are only allegations, and all persons charged are presumed to be innocent unless and until found guilty in court. A sentence following a finding of guilty is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
