Reid Faces Justice in Deadly Lauderhill Robbery

MIAMI, FL – A South Florida man is facing years behind bars after being convicted today for his role in a brutal 2015 home invasion that turned deadly. Collice Reid, 23, was found guilty of aiding and abetting the use of a firearm during a robbery in Lauderhill, Florida, which resulted in the murder of Donald “Eddie” Johnston.

According to evidence presented at trial, Reid wasn’t acting alone. He allegedly partnered with a crew of hardened criminals who engaged in a spree of violent crimes throughout 2015 – including armed home invasions, robberies, assaults, attempted murders, and outright killings. On November 4, 2015, Reid served as the lookout and getaway driver when the crew targeted Johnston in Lauderhill.

The robbery quickly escalated. One of Reid’s associates opened fire, fatally shooting Johnston. The senseless violence struck a particularly raw nerve, as Johnston’s parents were both dedicated members of law enforcement: his mother with the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) and his father with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. The details of the shooting were withheld for years while investigators built their case.

This isn’t the first conviction in this case. Derrick Slade, another member of the criminal group, was previously found guilty of his involvement and is already serving a life sentence plus 30 years. The FBI, leading a multi-agency task force, meticulously pieced together the evidence connecting Reid to the violent operation, ultimately leading to today’s conviction.

U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Markenzy Lapointe and acting Special Agent in Charge Maged Behnam of the FBI’s Miami Field Office jointly announced the verdict. The investigation involved significant collaboration between the FBI, BSO, Hollywood Police Department, Lauderhill Police Department, Hallandale Beach Police Department, Davie Police Department, and Fort Lauderdale Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Paul F. Schwartz and Jeffrey N. Kaplan spearheaded the prosecution.

Reid is scheduled to be sentenced on April 7, 2023, at 2 p.m. before the Honorable Paul Huck in Miami. Court documents related to the case – case number 20-CR-60107 – are available on the District Court for the Southern District of Florida website: http://www.flsd.uscourts.gov or http://pacer.flsd.uscourts.gov. Expect a lengthy prison term for Reid, considering the gravity of the crime and the victim’s ties to the law.
