Renaldo Smith Sentenced for Gunfire at Police, 25 Years to Prison

MACON, Ga. – Renaldo Smith, a 33-year-old Warner Robins resident with a notorious criminal background, has been sentenced to serve 25 years in federal prison after being convicted of shooting at law enforcement officers during an intense standoff.

The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Marc Treadwell on July 3, includes a total of 300 months behind bars followed by five years of supervised release. Smith’s previous convictions include robbery by force and possession of methamphetamine.

According to court documents, the incident began when the U.S. Marshals Service discovered Smith at a residence in Warner Robins on January 31, 2023. A search warrant was executed, leading to Smith opening fire and a lengthy standoff with law enforcement. The final resolution involved deploying pepper spray and exchanging gunfire, resulting in Smith’s capture.

“Renaldo Smith put the lives of many people at risk when he opened fire on law enforcement officers attempting to take him safely into custody,” said U.S. Attorney Peter D. Leary. “These highly trained officers are to be commended for their bravery.”

The U.S. Marshals Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, comprised of federal and state officers, plays a crucial role in apprehending violent fugitives. “This incident highlights the risks that these dedicated professionals face every day,” said U.S. Marshal Stephen Lynn.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a DOJ initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across the nation. The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service, Warner Robins Police Department, ATF, FBI, and Georgia Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Monica L. Daniels leading the prosecution for the Government.
