Repeat Bank Bandit Sentenced to 130 Months
A 65-year-old Medford man has been sentenced to 130 months in federal prison for bank robbery and interference with commerce by robbery. Gerald Thomas Schram, 65, of Medford, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Michael J. McShane on Thursday, March 16, 2017.
On January 20, 2014, Schram robbed a Minute Market in Medford, Oregon, fleeing with $605. The brazen heist took place when Schram, wearing a mask and hooded sweatshirt, shouted at the clerks and threatened to pull a gun. He was later found with most of the stolen money.
But Schram’s crime spree didn’t end there. On September 29, 2014, he robbed a U.S. Bank in Medford, Oregon, fleeing on a bicycle with $8,572. This time, he was caught hiding in his girlfriend’s home with most of the stolen loot.
Following a jury trial on September 27, 2016, Schram was convicted of the Minute Market robbery. He later pleaded guilty to the U.S. Bank robbery. Despite his age, Schram has a long history of crime, with seven prior felony convictions in California and Oregon between 1970 and 2014.
Schram has also served two prior federal prison sentences of 170 and 37 months for separate bank robbery and robbery convictions. The sentence handed down by Judge McShane also included three years of supervised release following his prison term. Schram was ordered to pay $9,177 in restitution.
The case was investigated by the Medford Police Department and the FBI’s Medford Resident Agency Office. Prosecution was handled by Jeffrey Sweet, Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Oregon.
Schram’s sentence is a stark reminder that crime doesn’t pay, especially for repeat offenders. As he begins his 130-month sentence, Schram will be forced to confront the consequences of his actions. The people of Medford can rest easier knowing that this bank bandit is behind bars.
While Schram’s crime spree is over, the impact of his actions will be felt for years to come. His victims will have to live with the trauma of their experiences, and the community will be left to pick up the pieces.
