HOUSTON, TX – Eduardo Ramiro Gonzalez-Leal, 41, is headed back to federal prison after being sentenced to 76 months for illegally reentering the United States – his third time doing so. The Mexican national, already burdened with a lengthy rap sheet, pleaded guilty on May 28th, and U.S. District Judge George C. Hanks delivered the sentence, citing both Gonzalez-Leal’s criminal history and the need to protect the public. Gonzalez-Leal’s record is far from clean. He’s a convicted felon with multiple charges including conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and driving under the influence. These convictions didn’t deter him from repeatedly flouting U.S. immigration laws. He was previously removed from the country in November 2015 and again in October 2021, only to reappear in Houston on November 27, 2023.
According to court documents, Gonzalez-Leal’s continued unlawful presence poses a clear threat. The 76-month sentence is intended to incapacitate Gonzalez-Leal and, following his imprisonment, he will once again be subject to removal proceedings.
