Rodrigo Miranda, Felony Second-Degree Theft, Washington 2023

WASHINGTON – A notorious repeat offender has been locked up for good after a string of brazen package thefts in the Adams Morgan neighborhood left residents feeling unsafe in their own homes.

Rodrigo Miranda, 43, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced to 7 years and 180 days in prison for felony second-degree theft, unlawful entry, and destruction of property, announced U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

The sentence was handed down after Miranda pleaded guilty to 43 counts of theft, with the court imposing consecutive sentences of 60 months for one conviction, 24 months for another, and 180 days for a third. The total sentence adds up to a whopping 7 years and 6 months in prison.

The package thief’s reign of terror lasted from July 19, 2022, to April 4, 2023, with Miranda targeting several locations in the Adams Morgan area. His method of operation was to break into areas he had no right to be in, causing property damage in the process. With multiple prior theft convictions on his record, Miranda was subject to enhanced penalties, including a mandatory minimum sentence of 1 year in prison.

The court heard from several victims, including one who expressed his deep unease with the knowledge that Miranda was lurking in his neighborhood. The community’s relief is palpable now that the package thief is behind bars, with attempted thefts plummeting in the area since Miranda’s arrest.

In announcing the sentence, U.S. Attorney Graves commended the hard work of the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for their tireless efforts in bringing Miranda to justice. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Connor Mulvey and Assistant U.S. Attorney Natalie Anderson were also praised for their dedication to the case.

As the community breathes a collective sigh of relief, Miranda will be spending the next 7+ years behind bars, where he can’t cause any more harm. It’s a significant victory for the people of Adams Morgan, and a reminder that justice is always within reach.
