Robert P. Burke, Bribery, Conspiracy, Washington 2022

Washington – In a stunning reversal of fortune for Admiral Robert P. Burke (USN-Ret.), 62, the retired four-star admiral was sentenced today to 72 months in prison by U.S. District Court Judge Trevor N. McFadden. The sentence comes after a jury found Burke guilty on May 19 of conspiracy to commit bribery, bribery, performing acts affecting a personal financial interest, and concealing material facts from the United States.

The former naval leader’s fall from grace began when he accepted future employment at a government vendor in exchange for awarding that company a government contract. In addition to the prison term, Burke must serve three years of supervised release, pay $322,850 in restitution, and forfeit $86,748.08.

Joining in the announcement were Special Agent in Charge Greg Gross of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) Economic Crimes Field Office, Special Agent in Charge Stanley A. Newell of the DoD Office of Inspector General’s Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS) Transnational Operations Field Office, and Assistant Director in Charge Reid Davis of the FBI Washington Field Office Criminal Division. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro emphasized that integrity is the currency of public service, and Burke’s actions were a betrayal of trust.

“No individual, regardless of rank or prior service, is above the law,” said Special Agent in Charge Newell of the DCIS. The FBI’s Reid Davis echoed the sentiment, stating that the FBI remains committed to justice when government officials abuse their positions for personal gain.

Court documents and trial evidence revealed that from 2020 to 2022, Burke commanded thousands of personnel. Despite Navy instructions, his co-defendants met with him in Washington, D.C., to reestablish a business relationship, agreeing that Burke would steer a contract to Company A in exchange for future employment.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who trade their honor and influence for personal gain within the ranks of public service.
