Grimy Times: Rex Lee Furman, a 52-year-old man from Federal Dam, Minnesota, has been sentenced to life in prison for producing, distributing, receiving, and possessing child pornography. Furman, who has two prior convictions for sexually abusing children, was found guilty on October 21, 2015, following a three-day jury trial.
The evidence presented at trial revealed that in 2013, law enforcement officers obtained child pornography videos from an internet protocol (IP) address linked to Furman’s home. During a search of his residence, Furman admitted to downloading child pornography and informed a special agent that he had produced images depicting child exploitation involving two girls, both younger than six years old at the time of the abuse.
Forensic analysis of Furman’s computers and digital media confirmed that he produced pornographic photographs and a video of those children in 2012. Investigators also found hundreds of images and videos depicting other children engaged in sex acts with adults in his possession.
Furman’s prior convictions date back to December 1981, when he pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a five-year-old girl, and January 1999, when he was convicted of sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl. As a result, he was required to register as a sex offender until 2021.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which leads the Minnesota Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and the Minneapolis Police Department, a member of the FBI Child Exploitation Task Force, investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Melinda A. Williams and Deputy Chief Alexandra R. Gelber prosecuted the case.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS). Furman was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $3,000 to two victims.
Furman’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the severity of child pornography-related offenses and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable. As our community continues to grapple with the issue of child exploitation, it is crucial that we prioritize the safety and well-being of our children.
