McALLEN, Texas – In a harsh blow to the city’s already-strained war on drugs, a Mexican national has been ordered to 57 months in federal prison for his role in trafficking over $1.2 million in cocaine.
Miguel Angel Reyes-Sanchez, a 40-year-old undocumented immigrant, pleaded guilty Aug. 2, 2024, to possessing narcotics with the intent to distribute, announced U.S. Attorney Nicholas Ganjei.
Chief U.S. District Judge Randy Crane handed down the sentence following a hearing that revealed Reyes-Sanchez’s pivotal role in the drug trafficking organization. The court heard chilling testimony that detailed his involvement in multiple transactions, cementing his status as a key player in the lucrative cocaine trade.
The investigation, led by the Drug Enforcement Administration with assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety, uncovered a staggering 3.5 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a silver Buick on April 2, 2024. Cesar Gonzales, 24, of McAllen, was driving the vehicle when authorities conducted a traffic stop.
Gonzales attempted to flee on foot, but law enforcement apprehended him. A month later, Reyes-Sanchez was involved in another drug transaction, resulting in the discovery of an additional 49.2 kilograms of cocaine. He admitted to knowingly transporting the drugs and providing them to Gonzales.
The estimated street value of the cocaine from both instances stands at $1.2 million, a staggering figure that highlights the devastating impact of drug trafficking on the community. Reyes-Sanchez will remain in custody pending transfer to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility, where he will serve his sentence.
Gonzales, who also pleaded guilty, was previously sentenced to 24 months in federal prison. The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against drug trafficking in the Rio Grande Valley and the need for continued vigilance from law enforcement.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jose A. Garcia prosecuted the case, bringing Reyes-Sanchez to justice for his role in the cocaine trafficking organization. The sentence marks a significant victory in the fight against drug trafficking and serves as a warning to those involved in the illicit trade.
