Newport Man Busted for Cocaine, Gun Charges
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Ian Andrade, 36, of Newport, is facing serious time behind bars after being ordered detained on federal drug and firearm charges. United States Attorney Peter F. Neronha and Newport Police Chief Gary T. Silva announced the news.
According to court documents, Newport Police executed court-authorized search warrants on Friday at Andrade’s Newport residence and for his vehicle. Detectives seized approximately 400 grams of cocaine, a loaded firearm from a hidden compartment in the rear passenger seat of the vehicle, nearly three-quarters of a pound of marijuana, and a shotgun from Andrade’s residence. Additionally, $4,435 was found on Andrade’s person.
Andrade was arrested by Newport Police on Friday. He is currently being held without bail as he awaits his next court appearance. The charges against him include one count each of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
A criminal complaint is merely an allegation and is not evidence of guilt. Andrade is entitled to a fair trial, where the government will have to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. If convicted, he faces a statutory penalty of up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $1,000,000 for possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute. Additionally, he could face a minimum of 5 years and up to life imprisonment for possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, to be served consecutive to any other sentence imposed.
The DEA and DEA Drug Task Force assisted Newport Police in the investigation of this matter. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Pamela E. Chin and Stephen G. Dambruch.
Andrade’s arrest serves as a reminder of the consequences of engaging in illicit activities. The Newport Police and federal authorities will continue to work together to keep our communities safe from the scourge of crime.
