Rice Farmer Poisoned Birds
Nelson Bulanek, 54, has been convicted of poisoning 69 birds, including 65 brown-headed cowbirds and four red-tailed hawks, on his Danbury rice farm in Texas.
The guilty plea was entered by Bulanek before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jason B. Libby.
Bulanek was ordered to pay a $10,000 community service payment to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Operation Game Thief Program and must serve two years of probation.
The investigation, conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, found that Bulanek had his workers mix a barrel of rice with the pesticide Bidrin, which is an organophosphate inhibitor used as an insecticide.
According to court documents, Bulanek admitted to ordering his workers to spread the poisoned rice on a recently harvested rice field for the purpose of killing birds.
The charges against Bulanek were the result of an investigation that began after Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officials received reports of numerous dead and dying birds on and near Bulanek’s property.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson and Southwest Region Special Agent in Charge Nicholas E. Chavez of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service praised the work of the investigators and prosecutors in securing the conviction.
