Convicted Methamphetamine Trafficker Faces Over 19 Years in Prison
A devastating blow has been dealt to the streets of Iowa City, as Richard Allen Tuan Casey, 37, was sentenced to over 19 years in federal prison for his role in a massive methamphetamine trafficking operation.
According to public court documents and evidence presented at sentencing, Casey sold controlled substances between at least early 2024 through May 2025. The extent of his involvement is staggering, with two days prior to his arrest, Casey traveling to a Walmart parking lot in Ames to pick up 30 pounds of methamphetamine in exchange for over $70,000.
Following multiple controlled buys of methamphetamine by a confidential informant, law enforcement arrested Casey. During a search of Casey’s property, law enforcement located 22 of the 30 pounds Casey had picked up two days prior, along with a loaded pistol, drug packaging, drug paraphernalia, and cocaine.
Casey’s guilty plea to the four drug trafficking charges in January 2026 did not shield him from all charges, as a jury found him not guilty of two counts of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime in February 2026.
Casey’s sentencing on July 15, 2026, marked the culmination of a lengthy investigation by the Johnson County Drug Task Force, led by United States Attorney David C. Waterman of the Southern District of Iowa.
After completing his term of imprisonment, Casey will be required to serve a five-year term of supervised release, a stark reminder that there is no parole in the federal system. As the people of Iowa City breathe a sigh of relief, one thing is clear – the streets will be safer without Richard Allen Tuan Casey peddling his poison.
The Johnson County Drug Task Force’s tireless efforts have brought another high-profile trafficker to justice, a testament to their commitment to keeping our communities safe. As the Grimy Times continues to shine a light on the dark corners of our society, one thing is certain – we will not rest until justice is served.
