Richard Anthony Trent Sentenced to 45 Months for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon in Scranton

A shocking act of violence has shaken the halls of the United States Penitentiary, Canaan, in Wayne County, Pennsylvania. Richard Anthony Trent, a 44-year-old federal inmate, was sentenced to 45 months’ imprisonment for the heinous crime of assault with a dangerous weapon.

According to United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam, the incident occurred on May 17, 2022. Trent, while an inmate at USP Canaan, brutally assaulted another inmate with a 7-inch grey metal weapon, also known as a ‘shank.’ The victim, seated in a prison common area, was repeatedly stabbed down on by Trent.

The case was thoroughly investigated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffery St John prosecuted the case against Trent.

United States District Judge Malachy E. Mannion presided over the sentencing hearing, where Trent was handed down the 45-month sentence. Notably, the judge ordered the sentence to run consecutively to the federal sentence that Trent was already serving at the time of the assault.
