A 35-year-old Butte man was sentenced to 54 months in prison for violating federal firearms laws.
Richard Daniel White pleaded guilty in February to being a prohibited person in possession of firearms.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, White was on state supervision for three separate felony cases of criminal endangerment, criminal possession of dangerous drugs, and attempted theft and criminal mischief.
The case began in February 2020 when state probation officers conducted a search of White’s residence after a positive urine analysis test for methamphetamine and information that White possessed stolen firearms.
During the search, officers found nine firearms and ammunition in White’s bedroom, including one semiautomatic firearm capable of accepting a large capacity magazine and several magazines capable of accepting more than 15 rounds of ammunition.
White was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Dana L. Christensen to 54 months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Montana Probation and Parole, and the Butte Silver Bow Law Enforcement Agency.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a U.S. initiative to reduce violent crime.
The government alleged in court documents that White, a convicted felon on state supervision, possessed nine firearms and ammunition in his residence during a probation search.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office emphasized that this case is part of an ongoing effort to reduce violent crime in Montana.
