Retired Teacher Charged with Possession of Child Pornography
A shocking case of child exploitation has come to light in Buffalo, New York. 71-year-old retired school teacher Richard W. Scherer has pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron J. Mango, Scherer had been communicating online with a 13-year-old female, discussing sexual acts, when he was confronted by a concerned citizen who had been posing online as the minor. This led to Scherer’s arrest on June 28, 2021, at a local grocery store.
During the search of Scherer’s cellular telephone, law enforcement officers seized an image of child pornography, further incriminating the retired teacher.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Buffalo Police Department, and the Cheektowaga Police Department, with the latter two agencies being directed by Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia and Chief Brian Gould, respectively.
Scherer’s case resulted from a lengthy investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Stephen Belongia, Special Agent-in-Charge. The case highlights the importance of online vigilance and the need for robust law enforcement efforts to combat child exploitation.
Sentencing is scheduled for September 15, 2022, at 1:30 p.m. before U.S. District Judge John L. Sinatra, Jr.
The community remains shocked by the revelation, with many calling for increased awareness and stricter regulations to prevent such incidents in the future.
