Richmond Man Sentenced for Copper Theft
Bangor, Maine – A Richmond man was sentenced for stealing copper from a facility operated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in Togus, Maine.
According to court records, Derek Less, 26, stole over 400 pounds of copper wire and pipe fittings from the VA in July and August 2012. He sold the stolen copper to Clark’s Cars & Parts, Inc. to support his drug addiction.
U.S. District Court in Bangor sentenced Less to time served, up to six months of community confinement and three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $2,590.30 in restitution.
Less has been detained since his arrest on November 19, 2013.
The investigation was conducted by the VA’s Criminal Investigation Division, Office of Inspector General.
Less’s sentence is a result of his actions, which not only damaged the VA facility but also put the community at risk. The sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of such crimes.
