Felon Returns to Federal Prison After Escaping from Cedar Rapids Halfway House
A 43-year-old man from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has been sentenced to an additional year in federal prison after he escaped from a halfway house in the city.
Ricky Joe Vaughn, 43, was sentenced on August 18, 2022, to 21 months in prison after pleading guilty to one count of escape from custody on March 8, 2022.
According to evidence presented at Vaughn’s plea and sentencing hearings, Vaughn was serving a 96-month sentence for unlawful firearms possession when he escaped from the halfway house on January 10, 2022.
Vaughn was granted home confinement in November 2021, but his privileges were rescinded in December 2021 after he violated the terms of his release. He was then transferred to the halfway house in Cedar Rapids.
On January 10, 2022, while a resident of the halfway house, Vaughn cut off his ankle monitor at his workplace and fled in another person’s vehicle. He was apprehended by the United States Marshal’s Service three days later at the other person’s apartment.
Vaughn has an extensive criminal history, dating back to 2001. In addition to his prior federal firearms conviction, he has felony convictions for theft and conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine in state court.
Vaughn is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. He must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after his prison term.
