Rapid City Man’s Descent into Crime Ends in Prison Sentence
A 35-year-old Eagle Butte man’s guilty plea to selling a stolen AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle for drugs has landed him in prison for the next two years. Jody Albert Hunt, 35, was sentenced to 24 months of custody on each count to run concurrently, 2 years of supervised release, and a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Hunt’s troubles began when he stole personal property from a ranch southwest of Cherry Creek, including the DPMS AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle. He then drove to Rapid City, where he sold the rifle to purchase drugs.
With the help of the Rapid City Police Department, Hunt was located and arrested. The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Rapid City Police Department, and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division.
But Hunt’s crime spree didn’t end there. While in custody at the Rapid City jail, he attempted to tamper with a witness to his burglary and theft, further complicating the case against him.
Fortunately for the victims, most of the stolen property and the AR-15 assault rifle were recovered. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson prosecuted the case, which has served as a reminder of the dangers of selling stolen goods and the importance of cooperating with law enforcement.
Hunt was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to begin serving his sentence. As he begins his time behind bars, the people of Rapid City and Eagle Butte can rest a little easier knowing that the man responsible for selling a stolen rifle is off the streets.
