Rikers Island Corrections Officer Sentenced To Over Three Years In Prison For Conspiring To Smuggle Contraband In Exchange For Bribes
New York, NY – Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that JASON SKEET, 46, of Brooklyn, was sentenced to 37 months in prison for conspiring to smuggle contraband to inmates at Rikers Island. The sentence comes after Skeet pled guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery before U.S. District Judge Jennifer H. Rearden.
Skeet’s crimes spanned from January 2020 until June 2022, during which he reportedly smuggled contraband – including marijuana and cigarettes – to inmates over 100 times, exchanging them for tens of thousands of dollars in bribes.
In a shocking exchange, Skeet was caught communicating with an inmate using a contraband cellphone. He agreed to provide the inmate with $1,000 worth of contraband, and the inmate transferred the money via CashApp. Skeet later confessed to smuggling contraband 100 times since the start of the pandemic.
Judge Rearden highlighted the seriousness of Skeet’s actions, remarking that his conduct demonstrated an “extraordinary lack of respect for the law.” Along with his prison term, Skeet was sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to forfeit $45,644.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Adam Z. Margulies, Jonathan E. Rebold, and Derek Wikstrom handled the prosecution of this case. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New York City Department of Investigation.
