Derek D. Brown, Assault on a Federal Officer, Missouri 2021

ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis County, Missouri, man has been sentenced to more than 23 years in prison for his brazen attack on police and federal task force officers in 2021.

In a harrowing incident that unfolded at his sister’s home, Derek D. Brown, 50, of Jennings, unleashed a barrage of gunfire at responding officers. On March 18, 2021, Brown engaged in a fierce shootout, firing through the screen door and then through the closed front door, until he finally surrendered.

The chaos began when Brown confronted his wife at her residence earlier that morning. In the heat of the moment, he grabbed his wife’s daughter’s .45-caliber pistol and fled. With an outstanding warrant for a parole violation hanging over him, authorities were tipped off by relatives to his probable destination – his sister’s house.

Brown pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in St. Louis to one count of assault on a federal officer and two counts of discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. His actions, which put numerous officers’ lives at risk, have earned him a sentence that will keep him behind bars for the better part of his remaining years.

The St. Louis County Police Department led the investigation into this high-profile case, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Donald Boyce prosecuted it with vigor. This incident is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in our communities. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a strategy to further strengthen PSN, focusing on fostering community trust, supporting prevention efforts, and setting strategic law enforcement priorities.

The sentence handed down today serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who threaten the lives of law enforcement officers and the communities they protect. Brown’s lengthy prison term sends a clear message: violent crime will not be tolerated in St. Louis County or anywhere else where justice prevails.
